Trash/Recycling Senior Discounts
The City of Reading provides waste collection services for residential properties within the City limits. This service is paid for the Waste Collection Fee that appears on your water bill. Starting in 2020, the City will offer a 50% discount to qualifying senior citizens.
The City of Reading recognizes that some senior citizens, especially those relying on social security or other sources of fixed income, may find waste collection services to be a burden on an already overburdened budget. To support seniors in need, the City will offer a senior discount to qualifying seniors. This is in addition to any assistance you may receive through the hardship program administered by the Reading Area Water Authority.
Qualifying seniors will receive a 50% reduction in the monthly waste collection fee for their place of residence. To qualify, seniors must:
- Be age 65 or older.
- Be the owner and a resident of a single-family dwelling where the discount is requested.
- Have a total household income of less than the area median household income ($30,087).
Residents requesting the Senior Discount can do so by completing the included form and submitting it to the Public Works Department along with the necessary identification and evidence of all household income. Evidence may include social security documents, prior year tax returns, or other evidence that clearly shows all household income.
Upon receipt of your form and verification of your completed application, a representative from the City of Reading will contact you. The representative will go over your application and may make a site visit to confirm the information in your application.
