Sustainability Manager


The City of Reading is committed to transitioning to 100% clean, renewable energy communitywide by 2050. The City is seeking a passionate and experienced professional to build on previous efforts and establish a formal Sustainability and Environmental program emphasizing social, economic, and environmental sustainability through outreach, education and policy initiatives with the Mayor and Administration. This position works closely with the City’s Solid Waste/Recycling Manager.

This is a multi-disciplinary role that requires significant knowledge of sustainability principles, experience implementing outreach initiatives, emphasizing education and policy creation. The Sustainability Manager collaborates with Reading’s Environmental Advisory Council and other stakeholders to include Business, Education, Commercial and Residential property owners. The sustainability program will be broad and impact all aspects of City government, however the Sustainability Manager will emphasize climate change, renewable energy and energy-efficiency, with the ability to represent the City in seminars and education Co-ops.

Project Development:

  • Working with other City staff and consultants, integrate sustainability principles into existing projects
  • Identify, justify, and work cooperatively to develop projects that forward sustainability goals.
  • Emphasize projects with an attractive ROI; such as lighting, updates with LED fixtures
  • Partner with various City-wide entities assuring success with various Federal, State and local agencies.

Outreach & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Develop and foster a common vision, goals and strategies for a sustainable Reading.
  • Develop and maintain a network of local business, higher education, non-profit, and governmental partners.
  • Work with community partners to organize promotional and education events. Participate in community events to educate the public on the value of a sustainable Reading.
  • Host workshops to engage the public and solicit feedback on plans and projects.
  • Communicate concepts and plans clearly and effectively to City staff, elected officials, and the public.


Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree, in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Planning, Public Administration, Economics, Engineering, or related fields. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, criminal history clearance Act 31/Act 34, and child abuse clearance Act 151.


  • A minimum of 4 years working in sustainability, with preference for climate action and energy.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
