POLICE RELEASES INFORMATION REGARDING TRAFFIC MODIFICATIONS TO ACCOMMODATE DOWNTOWN EVENTS

READING - September 16th: The Reading Police Department Traffic Division is releasing the following information relating to temporary traffic adjustments to accommodate various events occurring in the City this Sunday, September 18th.

"On Sunday, the City of Reading will host the 3rd Puerto Rican Day Parade & Festival," said Chief Tornielli. "These events will cause some traffic disruptions, mainly in the downtown area. The plan detailed below serves participants better, keeps attendees safe, and allows for efficient travel through the City."

If you are participating in the Puerto Rican Day Parade, read carefully; you must check-in for the parade (not spectators) at the Penn Street & N 11th Street area at 9 am. The 000 block of South 11th Street, 000 block of North 11th Street, 1100 block of Perkiomen Avenue, and lower City Park (Washington St // Rose Garden Rd) have been designated parade line-up staging areas. Upper City Park will not be affected.

Residents of these blocks, please pay close attention to the NO PARKING notices; vehicles should be cleared by 6 am to avoid towing.

At approximately 8 am, barricades will be posted in the intersections near the parade route, including southbound from Court Street to Penn Street (N 6th, N 8th, N 9th, N 10th) and northbound from Cherry Street to Penn Street (S 6th, S 7th, S 8th, S 9th, S 10th); traveling westbound on Cherry Street or eastbound on Court Street will not be affected. These closures are expected to be restored by approximately 2 pm or before (except for S 6th).

The following modifications will be necessary to accommodate the Puerto Rican Day Festival on Penn Street; starting at 6 am, barricades will be placed to secure the 400 & 500 blocks of Penn Street (4th & Penn, 6th & Penn, 5th & Court, 5th & Cherry). Before the festival's beginning time, this area will be limited to volunteers and festival personnel only.

Residents of these blocks, please pay close attention to the NO PARKING notices; vehicles should be cleared by 8 am to avoid towing.

The festival will kick off (at 1 pm approx.) around the parade's culmination. By this time, and out of an abundance of caution, additional safety measures will be observed. As a result, motorists traveling southbound on 4th Street and northbound on 6th Street will experience minor detours. Penn Street will be accessible northbound up to 4th Street and westbound up to 7th Street.

Traffic affected by the festival is expected to be restored by 10 pm.

"We kindly ask residents and visitors to use alternate routes to avoid delays. Stay away from these areas if not attending, and help us provide a safe celebration to all the fans."
