STATEMENT FROM MAYOR EDDIE MORAN
Mayor Morán reacts to the recent spike of shootings throughout the city.
READING – August 22nd: Mayor Eddie Morán today issued the following statement regarding a spate of shootings throughout Reading.
“This has been a trying week in the city due to the violence experienced nationwide. Our police department is still investigating the three incidents that occurred in the past week. So far, it appears that all of the incidents involve victims that the offenders targeted. But all violence, whether targeted or random, is unacceptable. No matter what the initial dispute, whether domestic related, drugs, gangs, or perceived disrespect, violence is no way to handle such situations and doesn’t solve anything.
A few months ago, I issued a call for action after a shooting at one of our playgrounds. As a result, my office and various organizations increased their involvement in youth violence prevention activities. Our mission is to provide our citizens, especially our youth, with the outlets and tools to select a safe and healthy lifestyle. Making good decisions and resisting being pulled into circumstances that could spur violence are paramount. To this end, organizations have promoted education, peer counseling, mentoring, and meaningful dialogue to reach out to our young men and women.
Through various partnerships, we increased activities such as providing summer jobs, outdoor movie nights, open gyms and parks through the night, free pool nights, and basketball tournaments, among others. In addition to National Night Out, First Friday, Peace & Gloves (boxing on Penn Street), community-favorite Wacky Water Wednesday, and so much more.
Investing in our youth is the best path forward. We will continue to prioritize such efforts with the fervent hope and belief that today’s youths will see a brighter and safer future than we experienced this past week. Nevertheless, we cannot let anything deter us from continuing our present course and searching for new initiatives. We must all be in this together.”

El alcalde Morán reacciona al reciente aumento de tiroteos en toda la ciudad.
READING – 22 de agosto: el alcalde Eddie Morán emitió hoy la siguiente declaración sobre una serie de tiroteos que han ocurrido en diferentes partes de Reading.
“Esta ha sido una semana difícil en la ciudad debido a la violencia que se vive en toda la nación. Nuestro departamento de policía se encuentra investigando los tres incidentes que ocurrieron esta semana pasada. Hasta el momento, parece que todos los incidentes involucran a víctimas a las que se dirigieron los atacantes. Pero toda violencia, ya sea dirigida o aleatoria, es inaceptable. No importa cuál sea la disputa inicial, ya sea doméstica, drogas, pandillas o falta de respeto, la violencia no es una forma de manejar tales situaciones y no resuelve nada.
Hace unos meses, hice un llamado a la acción después de un tiroteo en uno de nuestros parques de recreo. Como resultado, mi oficina y varias organizaciones aumentaron su participación en actividades de prevención de la violencia juvenil. Nuestra misión es brindar a nuestros ciudadanos, especialmente a nuestros jóvenes, los medios y las herramientas para seleccionar un estilo de vida seguro y saludable. Tomar buenas decisiones y resistirse a ser arrastrado a circunstancias que podrían estimular la violencia son primordiales. Con este fin, organizaciones han promovido la educación, el asesoramiento entre pares, la mentoría y el diálogo con propósito para llegar a nuestros jóvenes.
A través de varias alianzas, incrementamos actividades tales como trabajos de verano, noches de cine al aire libre, gimnasios y parques abiertos durante la noche, noches de piscina gratis y torneos de baloncesto, entre otros. Además de National Night Out, First Friday, Peace & Gloves (boxeo en Penn Street), Wacky Water Wednesday, el favorito de la comunidad, y mucho más.
Invertir en nuestra juventud es el mejor camino a seguir. Continuaremos priorizando tales esfuerzos con la ferviente esperanza y creencia de que los jóvenes de hoy verán un futuro más alentador y seguro que el que experimentamos la semana pasada. Sin embargo, no podemos dejar que nada nos impida continuar nuestro rumbo actual y buscar nuevas iniciativas. Todos debemos estar juntos en esto”.
