The event provided nearly 1,200 backpacks and school supply items to local students, along with more than 135 free haircuts and hairstyling services. Families also had access to food and refreshments, fresh fruit, vision screenings, and other community resources.
“This is what happens when a community decides to invest in its kids,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “For families, the start of a new school year can come with a lot of added expenses. Today was about making that a little easier while also giving our kids a chance to feel excited and confident about the year ahead. I’m proud of everyone who came together to make this happen and, most importantly, to make sure our children know their community is behind them.”
“In partnership with Mayor Eddie Moran, we broke our own record this year, distributing about 1,200 backpacks and providing 135 free haircuts and hairstyling services,” Guzman said. “With nearly 60 community partners, this event continues to grow as Berks County’s largest back-to-school resource hub. This event is about bringing essential resources and services together in one place for families across our community. I’m grateful to every partner, volunteer, and family who helped make our 5th Annual Back-to-School Resource & Giveaway such a success,” he added.
Now in its fifth year, the Back-to-School Giveaway continues to bring together local government, businesses, nonprofits, educators, health organizations, and community members around a shared goal: making sure Reading students have the resources they need to start the school year prepared.
The event would not be possible without the support of the nearly 60 sponsors and community partners who donated resources, services, time, and volunteers.
Mayor Morán and Rep. Guzman extend their appreciation to everyone who helped organize, sponsor, volunteer at, and attend this year’s Back-to-School Giveaway.
