City of Reading Seizes Large Quantity of Illegal Fireworks During Fourth of July Enforcement

Reading, PA: The City of Reading continued its annual enforcement efforts over the Fourth of July holiday to combat the use of illegal fireworks and protect residents, neighborhoods, and property.

Each year, the City mobilizes police and fire personnel to take a proactive approach to addressing illegal fireworks. In a densely populated urban environment, these fireworks present a serious risk of fires, property damage, and injuries. In accordance with Chapter 225 of the City of Reading Code of Ordinances, the use of fireworks within the City, including aerial fireworks, is prohibited except for permitted public displays.

This year, the Reading Police Department conducted a dedicated enforcement detail focused on illegal fireworks activity. Officers responded to 69 incidents involving illegal fireworks and seized a significant quantity of prohibited items, including:
•Approximately 60 prepackaged fireworks display boxes
•Approximately 25 pounds of 3-inch mortar shells
•Approximately 5 pounds of 2-inch mortar shells
•Approximately 2 pounds of linked firecrackers
•Approximately 40 bottle rockets and Roman candles

The Reading Fire Department responded to 12 fireworks-related calls for service during the holiday period. One significant incident involved a firework being fired at a vacant building, igniting the front entrance and causing a small fire. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, limiting the damage to the entrance area.

"Keeping our residents safe is one of our highest priorities," said Mayor Eddie Morán. "Illegal fireworks put lives, homes, businesses, and neighborhoods at risk. Every year, our Police and Fire Departments work tirelessly to enforce our ordinance, respond to emergencies, and help prevent tragedies before they happen. I want to thank all of our first responders for their professionalism and dedication to protecting our community."

The City of Reading reminds residents that the City's fireworks ordinance is in place to reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and property damage in Reading's densely populated neighborhoods.
