Design Guidelines
The following resources are available to guide property owners when determining proposed changes:
- Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation is a set of general standards which HARB follows. Established by the National Park Service, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation are the primary guidelines to consider when restoring or altering a property in a Historic District.
- The National Park Service has a division known as the Technical Preservation Services (TPS) which specializes in supplying information for the preservation and maintenance of historic buildings. TPS provides Illustrated Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings as well as Preservation Briefs which are organized by individual topics.
- Preservations Briefs offer additional information on historic rehabilitation. The briefs are broken down into several categories and offer information on window repair, roofing, brick repair and repointing, painting, the use of substitute materials, etc., along with photos and illustrations. Please refer to the Preservation Briefs when considering any alteration to your property. The Briefs can be found online at the National Park Service website at nps.gov/tps/how-to-preserve/briefs.htm or in print on the U.S. Government Printing Office Online Bookstore at https://bookstore.gpo.gov
