The Reading Public Museum is pleased to present the Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize® for Women Figurative Realist Painters, the inaugural award and exhibition for The Bennett Prize®, through the generosity of the Pittsburgh Foundation, Steven Alan Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt. A stipend/grant-in-aid award, the $50,000 Bennett Prize® is given biennially to a woman painter whose principal focus is figurative painting. The Bennett Prize® seeks to encourage the pursuit of figurative realism by women painters and provides support over two years to a painter whose work demonstrates excellence in the genre. The winner of the inaugural Bennett Prize is Aneka Ingold, a painter whose work explores women’s experiences across time, culture and history.

Realist painter and printmaker Jon Carsman (1944 – 1987), who was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, will be the focus of a works on paper exhibition at the Reading Public Museum from January 25 – May 10, 2020. The artist made a reputation for his dramatically colorful images of familiar suburban streets, Victorian architecture, gardens, and scenic country roads. This exhibition features more than thirty-five prints and watercolors from The Museum’s permanent collection.

Encourage your child's curiosity for the world around them with programs about nature. Hands-on activities, games, and stories fill this 1 hour, content rich natural science program. Examine mounted specimens, eggs, nests, bones, and more! A craft related to the topicof the day completes each lesson. For children ages 3-5, $5 per program.

Programs held at the Angora Fruit Farm or Bingaman Nature Center, please check each month to ensure location.

Join Environmental Education Program Manager, Jennifer Brooks, and partake in an egg hunt and adventure unlike any other. This non-traditional, non-competitive egg hunt will delight children and parents alike. Children will venture into the forest to hunt for and collect different types of decorated eggs that resemble hawks, owls, and other native birds hidden amongst the leaves. We will learn more about native nesting birds and the eggs prior to the hunt. Pre-registration is required.
