 The City of Reading, an urban community with a diverse population of over 95,000, is seeking a Chief of Police to lead a department of 168 police officers. Reading is the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania and has a strong Mayor form of government. The police chief is selected by the Mayor with ratification required by the City Council. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in modern police operational and administrative practices, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to create and implement a strategy of community policing and crime reduction. The Chief will be expected to advance the legitimacy and perception of the police by advocating actions that are supported by the community and is required to maintain a visible presence within neighborhood and business districts.

The ability to work cooperatively with local and county elected officials, municipal administration, citizens, and civic leaders is required. Candidates must have served at least 12 years as certified police officer and possess a minimum of 5 years of recent administrative and supervisory experience as a lieutenant or higher level within a similar or larger-sized department that serves an urban community.

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and a record of continuing career education and development that includes graduation from the FBI National Academy or similar executive level law enforcement training are preferred. A master’s degree is also preferred. A combination of education, training, and experience that closely meets the needs of The City of Reading will be considered.

The candidate must be currently certified under Pennsylvania Act 120 (53 Pa. C.S.A. § 2161) or be eligible to receive certification within 120 days of employment. Salary is dependent upon qualifications, within a range beginning at $140,000.00, DOQ.
