Gang Awareness
Gang
What comes to mind when you hear the word "gang"? How does it make you feel?
Vocabulary
damage, gangs, threaten
Idea
Gangs hurt people and damage things in the neighborhood. They often break the law. Gangs make people feel afraid to participate in neighborhood activities.
Objectives
Students should realize how terrible gangs are for the neighborhood. They should recognize and avoid gang activities by:
- Staying away from places where gang members "hang out."
- Never answering gang members who try to get you to join them.
- Always telling a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult if gang members threaten you or ask you to do something that is dangerous or harmful
If Gang Members Talk To You...
Get away and tell a parent, guardian or other trusted adult what has happened.
If There's a Fight
If a gang is fighting, or even two people from a gang or not, it means that someone is going to get hurt. Watching someone get hurt isn't fun and it can put you in a dangerous position. Don't watch, get away as quickly as you can.
Gunfire
If there is any gunfire you should lie flat on the ground behind a solid object. If there isn't anything solid, just lie flat on the ground.
If you happen to find a gun on the ground, in the trash, or anywhere else, don't touch it. Leave it right where it is and get a parent, guardian or other trusted adult. They shouldn't touch it either but should call the police and watch it until the police arrive. Police officers are trained in handling guns and have special procedures they use to insure their safety and the safety of those around them.
