Career Firefighter Job Description

The following benefits apply to probationary firefighters in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the City of Reading and Reading Firefighters’ Local 1803-IAFF for the contract period beginning January 2006 through December 2010.

· Probationary period of 12 months, during which time new employees will receive all necessary training as specified by the Department

· Entry-level salary $48,250 (effective January 2007)

· Longevity pay, life insurance, hospitalization, dental, vision and prescription program

· Employees having less than 15 years of service shall be granted 3 vacation periods of 72 hours per period

· Sick leave shall be earned at 2.5 shifts per month and shall be accumulated to a maximum of 105 shifts

· Holiday pay for 14 annual holidays

· Annual clothing allowance of $700

· One set of turnout gear to be provided by the City

Recruitment (Volunteer)

Membership in a volunteer company is open to anyone, however, volunteers wishing to participate in fire-fighting activities must be State-level certified in the “Essentials of Fire-Fighting” (or its equivalent), Hazardous-Materials Operations, and First-Aid/CPR.
