The following benefits apply to probationary firefighters in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the City of Reading and Reading Firefighters’ Local 1803-IAFF.
· Probationary period of 12 months, during which time new employees will receive all necessary training as specified by the Department
· Entry-level salary $39,980 (effective April 2011)

· *A certified eligibility list remains in effect for a period of three years. A new list is currently being certified.
Recruitment (Volunteer)
Members in good standing of the City’s volunteer companies may apply to the Lieutenant Training Officer for Certified Volunteer status. A Certified Volunteer status is required to ride on Departmental apparatus and participate in fire ground activities. An application for certified status may be picked up at the Fire Administration office.
The standard for Certified Volunteer is as follows:
· Background check by RPD (deep check at applicant’s expense, if necessary) Fire Fighter 1 NBFSPQ or IFSAC
· PA DOH First Responder
· Current Healthcare Provider CPR AHA or ARC
· Annual Haz-Mat Operations in compliance with OSHA 1910.120 and approved by the AHJ
· NIMS IS-800, IS-700, IS-200 & 100/Fire Service
