Civil Service Test

The Fire Civil Service Board of the City of Reading, Pennsylvania announces that applications are now being accepted for the position of Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic in the Reading Fire Department.

Printed applications are available from either Fire Administration or Human Resources located in City Hall, 815 Washington Street, Reading, PA 19601 or at the office of the Solicitor, Stephen H. Price, Esquire, 520 Walnut Street, Reading, PA 19601.

Applicants must be 18 years of age and must hold a valid driver’s license. Applicants for Paramedic must be Eastern PA Emergency Medical Services Council Medical Command or National Registry or PHRN.

Applications must be completed and returned in person to Stephen H. Price, Esquire, Solicitor, 520 Walnut Street, Reading, PA 19601 (610-376-1515) by close of business (4:00 p.m.) on March 9, 2012. The application must be accompanied with a check or money order made payable to the City of Reading in the amount of $50.00. Applicants will receive notification of the date and time for the written examination.

The top 75 scores in both categories and those with Veteran’s Preference will move forward with the physical agility testing. Applicants passing on to the physical agility testing will be notified in writing. Remaining test dates to be determined.

The following information details the Civil Service testing process.

  • Competitive Process
  • Fire Civil Service application - $50.00 Fee - Application Period Ended
  • Written Examination – time/place to be announced when application is returned - In Progress

Top 75 scores in both categories and those with Veteran’s Preference will proceed

  • Physical Ability Test
  • Note: A medical release signed by the candidate’s physician at candidate’s expense is necessary to take the Physical Ability Test
  • Oral Interview for those that have passed all previous testing
  • Eligibility list compiled
  • Conditional Offer of Employment
  • Medical Examination
  • Background Check – includes driving history and credit check
  • Appointment from Eligibility List



Description of entry level positions

  • Probationary period of 12 months, during which time new employees will receive all necessary training as specified by the Department.
  • Entry level salary - $39,980 (throughout the probation period)
  • Two day, two night, four off platoon schedule
  • Healthcare (Co-Pay)
  • Life Insurance
  • Paid Vacation (14 days)
  • Paid Sick Leave
  • Pension Plan
  • Holiday pay for 10 annual holidays
  • Annual uniform/clothing allowance (currently $700.00)
  • One set of turnout gear
